Central Coast Representative Teams

2011 -

2010 - Winners

2009 - Runners Up

Yes the news you’ve all been waiting for, (sorry for the delay), some computer isues. THE NSW STATE TITLES were held on the June long weekend just gone, at Fitzroy Falls with all games held at Illawarra Christian School Albion Park.

As you know we send a representative team every year to these titles, this year was no different. As we left on Friday night, piled into the bongo van, we were quietly confident of a good showing with the majority of the team already having tasted success in the local CENTRAL COAST CUP, of which the team is into the 1/4 Finals nd due to play the Premiere league table toppers WYOMING, if the rain ever stops. A pleasant 3 hour journey intermissioned with GPS failures and a remote bush road game of shin kicks with the Newcastle Boys. We arrived at our accomadationin the Southern Highlands.

Settled in we also took part in a late night hall soccer game against all comers shirts off was avoided by most, then we hit the sack. Saturday we played our first game , we were drawn against the locals, Illawarra Christian Churches, this game always is scrappy and hard. We struggled to keep posession with a lot if our passes missing the mark. Although we held well with , Heath Bonnefinn, Dave Donaldson Chris Barret and Lachlen Campbell all standing strong at the back. We had few chances and were left frustrated on many occasions. with about 15mins to go, Heartbreak. Illawarra scored a seagull goal, to take the points. This was the first loss against Illawarra for at least 6 years. The game probably deserved a draw but we had no complaints.

Fortunately we didn’t have to face the dreaded back up game adn had a 2 hour break to collect our thoughts. Realising that looosing a game makes it very hard to make the final on Monday. We then had to play the Mountains Christian Churches who had blown Newcastle away 4-2 in the first game. We set ourselves a goal just to improve on our first effort that we did. All players stepped up and made the extra effort. This game went down to the wire through the brilliance of Chris hogbin and Jason Bell we came back twice to level the game. Both goals were scored from penalties outside the area. Special mention must go to our magic keeper Jamie bonnefin, who kept us in the game, several times. Our midfield quartet of jason Chris Simon Vant and Paul Stilgoe, were gritty and stoic. With our wide men Markus Dawson, Shaun James providing both attack and defence in almost the same momments. 2-2 is how it finished.

So as seems always the case it came down to Mondays Games to decide the finalists for all teams. Who ever won their game would pretty much assure their final berth, with only the Mountains allowed a draw. That was exactly what happened, Illawarra drew in a hard faught game first up in Monday Morning. So who would make the final. We needed to beat Newcastle and beat them well by at least 2 goals. Impossible!!! Not exactly. We had struggled to score goals on Saturday and so decided to make some structual changes. With Jason Bell not making it back on Monday due to a injury in premier league on Sunday, we were down to 15. In all my 13 years at the state titles I have not seen a better performance in a must win situation as I was a witness to on this day. We took the game by the throat dominating in all 3rds of the feild. With an inspired performance by Chris Hogbin, Mick Bateman Aaron Soiland, Tim Richardson, we netted 5 goals to advance to the final.

This win however took it’s toll. We lost Aaron Soiland to hospital late in the game (dislocated Elbow) Simon Vant, and Matt Campbell also went down with muscualar injuries. So there we were sitting on the sidelines 15 mins before the Final having to back up. It was truly like a war zone. However we rallied all taking our feet. Hearing a stirring rendition of William Wallaces speech just before the battle of Stirling, we marched and hobbled onto the feild. All i can say is ” we were starving and outnumbered, we took the feild and fought like warrior poets we fought like men and we…………didn’t win”. 2-1 to the mountains was how it finished but, with all injuries and effort spent Central Coast Churches once again proved they have 1 of the strongest Churches Comps in the State.

Special mention must go to; Chris Hogbin who won the best and fairest for the Titles. Michael Bateman, Paul Stilgoe, Jamie Bonnefinnand Tim Richardson. Who all made the NSW STATE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. Who will carry the flag to WA in October.
